Overview:
Hogwarts Legacy, a 2023 action role-playing game, was developed by Avalanche Software and published by Warner Bros. Games under its Portkey Games label. The game is set in the Wizarding World universe, based on the Harry Potter novels, and was released for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S in 2023. Later in 2023, it will be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
In this prequel to the novels, set in 1899, players control a student at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, learning to wield magical abilities and objects with the help of fellow students and professors.
Avalanche Software's acquisition by Warner Bros. in 2017 marked the studio's first release, and development for Hogwarts Legacy began in 2018. While the game was first scheduled to release in 2022, it faced delays before being released in its final version. Leaked pre-release gameplay footage was available online as early as 2018.
Despite technical problems and side missions, the game received generally positive reviews from critics for its characters, combat, and world design. However, prior to its release, J.K. Rowling's controversial views on transgender people, combined with allegations of the game containing antisemitic tropes, sparked calls for a boycott.
Gameplay:
Hogwarts Legacy is an action role-playing game set in the Wizarding World universe where players attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and explore various locations, including unseen areas such as the Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw common rooms. Players can customize their character's appearance, house, gender, voice, body type, and accessories during character creation.
The game features level progression through combat, quests, exploration, and in-game challenges, which allow players to gain experience points, access and upgrade different spells, talents, and abilities. The game also includes environmental customization elements, which allow players to modify the Room of Requirement as they level up through the game.
The player character can learn to cast various magical spells, brew potions, and master combat abilities, developing their unique combat style. Players can acquire combat items through trading or crafting and can ride different magical beasts, including hippogriffs and thestrals. Dragons, trolls, and other magical creatures are also interactable and can be used in combat.
Establishing friendships with non-player characters can expand the player character's abilities, offer unique dialogue options, and allow companions to accompany players on their journey. While attending classes does advance gameplay mechanics, attending classes is not a scheduled gameplay element in itself, and classes are attended as part of plot development milestones.
Additionally, while house points for the four Hogwarts houses play a part in the game's plot, they are not influenced by player actions
